Example Section C question - Mrs. Ricci's pick - see example solution below
" Give an example of a simple phobia and explain the roles of classical Conditioning and Operant Conditioning in the acquisition and maintenance of this phobia.
In your response ensure that you use the appropriate terminology for Classical and Operant Conditioning."
Think about the criteria - identify, describe, explain, analyse, evaluate.......
Section C - Extended Response will be examined under the following criteria:
In response to the specific question requirements, students will demonstrate an ability to:
1. identify and describe the key terms/theories/issues 2. explain the relevant terms/theories/issues and make connections between psychological concepts/theories and data and research 3. use appropriate examples/evidence/data to support the response 4. interpret and analyse the issues/data/information 5. evaluate issues/data/information and draw appropriate conclusions
This question was for 15 marks.
Remember it is a question worth 15 marks - at a maximum you should spend 20 minutes and 5 minutes of reading time.
SAMPLE ANSWER:
The best chance of gaining all 15 is to try and gather those marks out of the clues in the question. An example of simple phobia:
state the definition of a phobia - general ie: irrational fear of something which may lead to anxiety in extreme cases.(1 mark)
given an example - arachnophobia (name and explanation of what it is a phobia of) ie that it is an irrational fear of spiders which in extreme cases could lead to an anxiety attack which could interfere with everyday functioning (2 marks)
role of classical conditioning in the acquisition of the phobia.
Begin with a statement about the unconditioned stimulus (UCS) = pain or discomfort from a spider bite and unconditioned response (UCR) = fear of pain or discomfort. (2 marks)
The neutral stimulus (NS) of "a spider" is paired with a bite (UCS) or the freight of seeing one in a surprising location - this may happen once or a number of times but the result is that the previously neutral stimulus (NS) of the spider will illicit the fear response (CR) when sighted without an attack (bite = UCS). (3 marks)
role of operant conditioning in the maintenance of this arachnophobia phobia
Once the behaviour is established - fear of spiders, the behaviour is maintained via operant conditioning. It is actually the behaviour of avoidance that provides a positive consequence for the person and this reinforces the likelihood of the behaviour occurring again to repeat this positive consequence - (not coming in contact with spiders) - could write as stimulus, behaviour and consequence - the three phases of the Skinner model to explain operant conditioning. (4 marks)
role of classical conditioning in getting rid of the phobia
Could then mention how classical conditioning works to replace the fear response with a relaxation response so that in teh presence of the spider no longer does the person experience anxiety (3 marks)
The last 3 marks may have been awarded for the structure and content of the response which is a bit subjective. It doesn't specifically ask for the second classical conditioning reference but it is the next logical step. so you can award those marks for either. I would suggest either 2 or 3 marks just for your approach outside of content.
Be sure to read over your master notes and read relevant sections of your text.
